Phil has been a judge for the Publican Awards since 1998, having begun working as a journalist writing about, and for, the pub industry in 1984 when he joined the Morning Advertiser – then a daily newspaper.
Born in East London, the grandson of a pub tenant, he is now based in Brighton, from where, on freelance basis, alongside his judging duties, he continues to cover the pub and beer sectors for the Morning Advertiser and other publications. He is also a regular judge for the Great British Pub Awards.
His other obsession is alcohol policy, which he reflects on from time to time in his Politics of Drinking blog at www.philmellows.com.
